In class we have been reading
the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. It is a sad, fictional, story of an old lady who is telling her story of growing up as a slave, and her journey towards Ohio. Throughout her journey she meets a lot of people whites, blacks, and anti blacks. there are so many stereotypes built around the fact that since they are slaves, they are dumb, or unable to function. Yet, throughout the book many times they prove that they don't just function they succeed. Big Laura, a big farm hand, takes control and leads the slaves part way through the biouh. Jane herself keeps pushing herself to get what she wants. Even though everyone's telling her she cant. The stereotypes are not just on the slaves, but the southern whites. They treat them as cruel individuals, but through her journey there were whites who cared and tried to help. Just because someone looks different, or not in your social group, it doesn't mean they are incapable, or less of a person.
